At the symposium, on July 28, 2025, at 2:20 PM, Stefanie will present recent findings in a session entitled “2D MRI Vocal Tract Movements of Estill Voice Figures – Links Between Pedagogy and Science.” This research, conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Musicians’ Medicine at the University Clinic Freiburg (Germany), utilizes high-resolution 2D and 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the dynamic mechanisms of the vocal tract during singing and speaking. The presentation focuses on aspects such as tongue motion and spatial modifications of vocal tract structures associated with various Estill Voice Figures and Qualities, including Speech, Falsetto, Sob, Nasal & Oral Twang, Opera, and Belting.
By systematically correlating imaging data with pedagogical constructs from Estill Voice Training, the study provides interesting anatomical and physiological insights. These findings contribute to a more precise understanding of voice production and hold significant implications for evidence-based vocal pedagogy and performance training.
