Responsive Breathing™️ - Task Based Breath Training for Speaking and Singing
There is a great deal of misunderstanding among teachers and performers over the role of breathing in voice production, pitch production and in controlling volume. This confusion is understandable given the status of traditional teaching that is often contradictory and inconsistent with both physiological function and acoustics.
The truth is that breathing that is identified as being consistent is the complete opposite. Breath pressure is constantly adjusting in line with pitch, dynamic, Voice Quality, consonants and of course, emotion.
How can we train the breath to ‘respond’ instantly to these changes, leaving the performer free to focus on artistry, characterisation and acting, in both singing and speaking?
How should this be interpreted, what does it mean and how can we apply it to the training and artistic requirements encountered by performers of all levels?
The day will include:
• The key difference in ‘breathing for life’ vs ‘breathing for voice’
• What breathing can’t do
• Why pushing isn’t support
• Physical set ups that allow for more efficient breathing
• Common breathing problems and how to address them
• Teaching and training tips
• Application in speaking and singing
• Short masterclass
• Q&As
This workshop will look at how to develop Responsive BreathingTM an approach developed by Anne-Marie Speed in accordance with the Estill principle of “the breath must be free to vary according to what it meets on the way out”.
Suitable for: People new to Estill Voice Training and those familiar with it; anyone looking for clarification and consolidation; actors and singers, teachers and performers, students and professionals, novices and experts, SLTs and clincians.
