Misericordia University logoThe Master’s of Science (MS) degree in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) at Misericordia University is a five-year undergraduate-to-graduate degree focusing on all aspects of Speech-Language Pathology. The SLP Department is the flagship SLP Estill Education Affiliate (EEA). Estill Voice Training (EVT) Level 1 and 2 courses and concepts are embedded in the graduate course, SLP 530 Vocal and Velopharyngeal Disorders. Transfer students and nontraditional graduate students to the Misericordia University graduate SLP program are required to take the SLP 530 course and also receive the EVT content in that course.

Graduate students are introduced to the Estill Voice Model as it is integrated into topics on anatomy and physiology of the vocal mechanism, as well as in voice and speech science concepts. The Estill Voice Model is one of the primary models utilized as a resource for implicit-explicit instruction as a key motor learning principle for voice therapy. Students also learn how to incorporate the Estill hand signs as gestural cues for motor imagery and action observation.

Cari M. Tellis, Ph.D. (EMCI), full professor in the SLP Department, has been using the Estill Voice Model in research, clinical practice, and teaching for almost two decades. Dr. Tellis’s work in integrating the Estill Voice Model into voice therapy has been published in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s publication, Perspectives on Voice and Voice Disorders (Tellis, 2014; Tellis, 2018). Students apply EVT concepts learned in the SLP 530 course to clinical practice when Dr. Tellis supervises students working with clients with voice disorders, motor speech disorders, articulation disorders, and dysphagia. Many of the students get hands-on, practical clinical experience in many of these clinical areas. Dr. Tellis also uses Estill Voice Training concepts when teaching young performers singing and speaking strategies in the local, nonprofit performing arts training academy she runs called, PATAsphere.

The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Misericordia University is located in northeastern Pennsylvania, USA. The thriving department has both in-person students, as well as synchronous and asynchronous online cohorts.

PennWest California Theatre has established the Estill Voice Model as the vocal foundation for all of its actors, both singing and non-singing. Dr. Michele Pagen (EMT), Professor of Theatre, utilizes Estill in all her acting, directing, and voice & speech courses. Brian Eisiminger (EMT) and adjunct Professor of Theatre, teaches the figures and qualities in all course levels of musical theatre performance and in private voice lessons. Because students in both the BA in Theatre: General Track and the BA in Theatre: Musical Theatre Concentration must learn and use Estill in all their performance-related courses, they are better equipped to connect use of the voice with character creation and to deliver consistent, quality performances under the direction of faculty members who use a common vocal vocabulary

As part of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, our theatre programs serve a dual function, providing occupational education and training for talented students pursuing careers in theatre, as well as providing educational and performance opportunities for all students. Our department rewards creative excellence by offering opportunities for upper-level students to produce, choreograph, direct, and/or design both large and small productions.

The campus of PennWest California is located not far from the birthplace of Jo Estill in nearby Donora, PA, and has been hosting Level 1 and 2 Courses each June since 2007. The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Saint Mary's College of California Logo

Nestled in the rolling hills of Moraga, just 23 miles east of San Francisco. Saint Mary’s College of California is more than a place to get a stellar education in a stunning location (although that part goes without saying). Recently earning a spot in US News & World Report’s Top 4 Colleges in the West, Saint Mary’s is known for its small class sizes and student-to-faculty ratio, its recognition as a top Fulbright Producing institution, and its Catholic, Lasallian, and Liberal Arts Traditions that fuel the college’s perspective on teaching and learning.

The Music Program incorporates Estill Voice Training into its non-genre biased instructional model, and students are exposed to as many genres of music as possible in their training. Our graduates perform and teach in styles as varied as classical, jazz, R&B, pop, rock, and folk. Saint Mary’s is thrilled to join the community of peer EEA institutions, and looks forward to continuing to be a center for Estill Voice Training on the West Coast.

Certified Trainers include Dr. Julie Ford (EMT), Michael Blackburn (EFP), Jaron M. LeGrair (EMT-C), Amy Stabnau (EMT), and Alexander McDaniels (EMT).

UCF LogoAt the University of Central Florida, Estill Voice provides a pedagogical framework for BFA Musical Theatre majors as they begin their educational journey of training their singing voices for the industry.  This course of study is housed in Theatre UCF which is one half of the School of Performing Arts and is taught by Tara D. Deady (EMCI), an Associate Professor-Musical Theatre Voice Specialist and the Coordinator of the MA in Musical Theatre Pedagogy.  Dr. Steven Chicurel-Stein, the founder of these courses as part of the curriculum,  (EMCI/SD/ATP) is a Professor Emeritus of Theatre. Other faculty in Theatre and in the Department of Music (the other half of the School of Performing Arts) have attended Estill Levels 1 and 2 workshops and/or taken the Foundations of Estill course.

Estill for MT Craft (Levels 1 and 2) and Estill for MT Voice – Artistry are taught each year to first-year students in Musical Theatre. Applied Musical Theatre Voice I-VI takes place in applied voice studios and focuses on building repertoire, as well as advanced topics in musical theatre voice. The Master of Arts in Musical Theatre Pedagogy also features a voice course which covers Levels 1 and 2 and application of that material for pedagogical purposes. When teaching schedules allow, students in other Theatre degree programs (Acting, Theatre Studies, Bachelors and Masters level) receive an introduction to the Estill Voice Training framework and its application to singing and speaking through their required voice courses and/or independent studies. In this way, Estill helps provide an emphasis on vocal health, flexibility, and empowerment in classes, studios, and rehearsals.

The undergraduate musical theatre program at UCF is highly competitive. Some 300-600 potential students are seen through a combination of pre-screening auditions through Acceptd.com, and regional combined audition events, with between 80-130 receiving callbacks for sixteen first-year slots. Experiences students have in classes, lessons, rehearsal and production provide them with the competitive edge to succeed as sought-after theatre professionals. The Musical Theatre curriculum includes the full complement of skill-development classes (acting, singing, dancing, music theory, piano) and theatre/musical theatre history and literature, make-up, all areas of theatre production, directing and career development. Industry access is a vital part of elevating our students’ experience through professional workshops with Casting Directors, Regional Theatres, Professional Agents and other industry guests throughout the school year. Seniors culminate their four years of study with a Capstone performance which connects them to various members of the industry and is a highlight of our annual Celebrates the Arts festival housed off-campus at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando
