BELTING is a specific type of very loud voice production used in musical theatre, pop, different kinds of folk music, and in some ways even in some operatic performance and in acting.
Thrilling and exciting, often improperly and summarily called “chest voice in the high range” or “mix”, its common definition, as well as its relationship with vocal health, can be controversial.
More and more performers every year are using belting in their performance, especially in Countries where its definition was unknown until some years ago. More teachers have started to teach or mention it in their lessons. However, dealing with belting without an exact knowledge of its mechanics and an accurate, specific training can be very frustrating and detrimental. Additionally, any other loud sound – can harm the vocal health.
However, Estill Voice Training offers a detailed physiological description of belting and a series of detailed exercises. There are “dos and don’ts” to establish a safe, effective, successful belting; this system of practice based on EVT has been safely training performers in Broadway and West End as well as pop singers for more than 20 years now.
In this course, we’ll try to clarify all the doubts about belting, explain its physiology, establish an efficient practice, and learn easy but safe exercises to build a belting sound successfully and safely. Individual work on repertoire is included.
After a theoretical introduction, the work will be very practical and will aim to use technique for an effective artistry.
Those who are totally new to EVT can participate, and a short general introduction will be given in the first lessons.
The course is divided in 3 Modules that can be either attended separately or in combination with other modules:
Module 1: EVT Intro. The attendance of this Module is mandatory for those new to Estill. Those who have attended an EVT Intro or an EVT Level1&2 Course can skip this Module, but if they want to attend it, they will be able to participate for free. This Module will be opened only if eligible students (new to Estill) register. This Module can be attended only in combination with Module 2 or Module 2 and 3 and it will be delivered online on Aug 31st and Sept 1st , 3pm-7pm.
Module 2: Belting Basics. This module explores the foundation of Belting: definition and effective practice to establish a safe belting, dos and donts, warm up for belting, suggestions for repertoire. Some preparation for Module 3 might be included (subtle variations, higher range, etc). An open coaching session on volunteers might be included. This Module can be attended alone or in combination with one of the other Modules. Module 2 will be delivered in person face to face for 4 consecutive Thursdays (Sept 5,12,19,26). The course will temporarily switch online in case of typhoons or other major inconveniences. Lessons will be recorded for absent students. The cost of this Module is 5000HKD (4000HKD by the 15th of July) if attended alone. The combination of this course with one of the other 2 Modules (either 1+2 or 2+3) costs 6500 HKD (5000HKD by the 15th of July).
Module 3: Belting Advanced. This module explores the advanced practice and application of Belting: variations for different styles and genres, bringing Belting higher in the range, permutation of belting, adding vibrato, interaction with diction, problems and solutions. An open coaching session on few volunteers is included. This Module can be attended alone (if Module 2 has been attended in the past) or in combination with one or both the other Modules. Module 3 will be delivered in person face to face for 4 consecutive Thursdays (Oct 3,10,17,24). The course will temporarily switch online in case of typhoons or other major inconveniences. Lessons will be recorded for absent students. The cost of this Module is 5000HKD (4000HKD by the 15th of July) if attended alone. The combination of this course with Module 2 costs 6500 HKD (5000HKD by the 15th of July).
The total cost of all the 3 Modules (if purchased at the same time) is 9000HKD (8000HKD before the 15th of July) and it includes a free 30 minutes 1:1 lesson (to schedule after the end of the course. It might occur in a different venue).

Participants who have attended already an EVT Level1&2 have Module 1 entirely for free + 500 HKD discount if they attend Module 2 and Module 3 together.
